I always teach my students that when you see a lot of headlines happening that have to do with things of a racial nature-- things that pit us against each other and get us arguing and fighting-- always look "behind" at the secondary headlines, as time like these are usually when the politicians are trying to distract you away from what's really going on... political slight-of-hand, if you will.
Sound paranoid? Check your headlines. Go on. Look back at the large flashpoints in race relations in our country over the past few years, and then look "behind" them at the "secondary" headlines. And they don't just use race, but race is the easiest and most incindiary and effective topic, at least in our country.
So, just yesterday while we all argued over who was paying what for a concert that none of us were going to anyway, and half of the country wanted to clap for the women's soccer team while the other half wanted to literally clap them, here was one of the "back" headlines: "Tensions Rise In Middle East As Iran Reportedly Increases Uranium Enrichment."
You're welcome.
